On November 25, 2024, the International Day of Action against Violence against Women and Girls, we as a women’s shelter took part in an impressive procession of lights through Bonn’s city center. Together with the Bonn SI Clubs, the Zonta Club Bonn-Rheinaue, the Zonta Club Bonn, the Evangelical Church District of Bonn, UN Women Germany and the Equal Opportunities Office of the City of Bonn, we set a shining example against violence and for solidarity with those affected.

The candlelight procession led from the Kreuzkirche to the Rathausplatz and was enriched by the wonderful musical accompaniment of Marie Enganemben. A glowing symbol of a woman made up of 365 grave lights shone in the town hall square – a powerful symbol of the fact that every day in Germany a woman dies as a result of violence.

Poignant speeches by Juliane Schulze-Wehnick, Claudia Külpe and the Mayor of Bonn Katja Dörner, among others, made the event a special experience. A special moment was when the Lord Mayor lit a light to show her support.

This emotional and meaningful action was a reminder that any form of violence is unacceptable and that it takes a strong social commitment to bring about change.

We would like to thank all the participants and organizers who made this day so meaningful and hope that we were able to reach many people with this campaign.
